11 years ago today Cal Ripken, Jr. broke the record for consecutive games played in MLB. Why does this date stand out so much for me? Am I a huge baseball fan? Not really. Do I have any ties to Baltimore or remotely like their baseball team? No.
The reason that I will always remember September 6, 1995 is that it is also the day that my mother died. Every time I hear about Ripken and his stupid record I am taken back to that day in the ICU.
My mother died of really odd circumstances. She had a sinus infection that led to an ear infection. When this did not respond to antibiotics, it caused her eardrum to burst. The infection then spread to the lining of her brain, the menges. This infection of the brain lining is called menengitis. She was hospitalized and pumped full of antibiotics that had no effect. After being in a coma for less than a week, the swelling around her brain caused an anurism and death.
I never got to have a meaningful conversation with my mother after she got sick. I was young and not prepared for her death. I often wish that she had survived to witness my marriage (both of them, ha) and spend time with my children. My mother was a great lady. She passed from this world 11 years ago today at the age of 56. I love you, Mom.

My Mom died at 54 years of age. So young right? I often miss her and want to call her on the phone just to chat. It must be even harder for you - having kids - and wanting to share that joy with her. I wish you comfort of the angels whenever you are missing her.
blessings!
