Morbid post number 2 for the day.

Speaking of people dying way too young, one of my best friends growing up and my college roommate died on Aug. 22 at the age of 34. He had a heart attack at his home. He had a rare blood disorder 10 years ago that almost killed him at the time. I am not sure how this was related to his heart attack.

The part that really bothers me about his death is how long it had been since we had seen each other. He returned to our home town after college. I did not. As family and work took more and more time, we had not kept in touch as much. I am glad that I did talk to him on the phone about a month before his death. I wish I had seen him more.

Cox, I loved you like a brother and I will miss you. I hope you can watch football in the after-life and you got to see the butt-whipping we put on Cal. You would have loved it!

This day in history (Warning: Morbid Post)

11 years ago today Cal Ripken, Jr. broke the record for consecutive games played in MLB. Why does this date stand out so much for me? Am I a huge baseball fan? Not really. Do I have any ties to Baltimore or remotely like their baseball team? No.

The reason that I will always remember September 6, 1995 is that it is also the day that my mother died. Every time I hear about Ripken and his stupid record I am taken back to that day in the ICU.

My mother died of really odd circumstances. She had a sinus infection that led to an ear infection. When this did not respond to antibiotics, it caused her eardrum to burst. The infection then spread to the lining of her brain, the menges. This infection of the brain lining is called menengitis. She was hospitalized and pumped full of antibiotics that had no effect. After being in a coma for less than a week, the swelling around her brain caused an anurism and death.

I never got to have a meaningful conversation with my mother after she got sick. I was young and not prepared for her death. I often wish that she had survived to witness my marriage (both of them, ha) and spend time with my children. My mother was a great lady. She passed from this world 11 years ago today at the age of 56. I love you, Mom.

Tempting fate to update the blog

A few weeks ago there was word that the higher ups here at work were going to review email and internet usage for each employee for the purposes of "headcount reductions", aka firings. So I have been hesitant to update since then. At home I tend to get too wrapped up in the wife and kids to do much blogging.Since I have survived here this long, I decided to post. It has been a pretty eventful month.

The MRI on my foot revealed a partial tear of my plantar fascia. I have been doing physical therapy for a couple of weeks and I anticipate that I will be out of my walking boot and in regular shoes in a couple of weeks. The doctor seems to think that it should fully heal and I won't have any chronic problems.

My family joined a church last month. It is the first time I have been a member of a church other than the one I grew up in. I am now a card carrying Methodist (they didn't really give me a card) It is a nice, smaller church and I like the Methodist philosophy.

My daughter started Kindergarten last month and is doing great. She and my son are as cute as ever.

Football season kicked off last weekend and I am psyched. I am a huge football fan. My Tennessee Vols looked really good in a dismantling of the over-hyped Cal Bears. I hope we maintain the intesity and discipline all year that we showed against Cal. I have been hopeful that the Washington Redskins would be good this year, but they have looked horrible in the preseason. I hope they show up better during the regular season.

Getting old and feeble sucks

(Formerly known as my moment in the sun)

Last night we had 11 players, so I caught instead of playing right field. I did hit the ball well a couple of times. However, in my final AB, I grounded between short and third. I ran like hell and beat out the throw. I hit the bag or ground really hard with my left foot and now I can't put any weight on my left foot. It is just the heel. It feels really deeply bruised, but the Dr. said that there may be ligament damage. MRI to tell more Friday. I am on crutches right now, which REALLY sucks.

I fought the pool and I cold won

My pool pump motor was making a really high pitched whine and not pumping at the end of last week, so I called and asked for someone to look at it. The technician showed up at the beginning of the 5 hour window that they gave me and left before I got home to meet him. I manned up and took the motor off myself (3 wires and 6 bolts). Went and got a replacement at the pool store and put it on myself.

I saved myself at least $200 by doing that myself.

This goes against every fiber of my being

I need to go talk to my boss and tell him that I am not very busy and that he should assign me something. I fear that eventually someone will realize they have been paying me to surf the internet and blog lately.

I know that my assignment will be an engineering change. I hate working other people's screw-ups.

But, alas, I am an agent of change.

My moment in the Hot Ass Sun III

Well, Tuesday was the first loss of the season for Sofa King good. All hopes of going undefeated are dashed. I went to the batting cage before the game with no improvement. I did make a good catch in right field. The guy blooped it opposite field and I ran in and caught it across my body at about thigh level on a dead run. It was a good catch.

My Moment in the Hot Ass Sun II

This past Tuesday I was back in right field for Sofa King Good. We played a pretty good team. I caught three flies that game. One short looper that I ran in on behind the second baseman and two line shots (that I was very proud of catching) toward the right field line. Two of these catches were in the same inning, too. I fielded well.

Now if I can only get my bat live. I keep grounding to the third baseman. I beat it out or it is a bad throw about half of the time, but it is like running windsprints. I want to hit some line drives.

Thinking on the drive in this morning

As I often do. I've had short commutes (~15 min) and now it takes me 35 if I drive it straight and almost an hour when I take the kids to daycare in the morning. That is a lot of time to think and listen to music. I need to give ESPN radio a shot maybe. But I digress.

I enjoy that wake-up time in the morning to gather my thoughts and think about what I probably will not do today. It is a slow Friday for me. I'm caught up on all my projects and my boss is not here. This is one of those days that I would be at home on a sick day if I was direct. Not that the ear infection is still bothering me THAT bad, but it is a valid excuse. My wife has a more than valid excuse, but I will leave that for another post. My point is I need to be somewhat busy looking for the next couple of days, because this Saturday is when I begin my Saturday morning work paradigm. We will see how it goes. As long as it does not impose on my football time, all will be fine. The kids will be napping most of the time that I am at work. If I work 5 hours on Saturday then I only need to work 9 hour days during the week to get the OT that pays the bills. I'm getting all Dave Ramsey on it.

Instead of getting a part time job, though, I work more OT at this job and indulge my creative side from time to time. What I thought about this morning was the reason I had created this blog "Quid Stuprum", which roughly translates to the phrase that Tom Cruise's character told the Ivy League recruiter when he happened upon his party in Risky Business. I think that we would all like to think that there was some creative spark within us, whether it be music, art, photography, or even sports. We want to have that some little something that makes us different from the next guy. Well, I have always enjoyed reading, and I have discovered that I enjoy writing. Taking typing over Physics turned out to be a pretty good call after all.

It is not just the creativity, though, but a way to express my self in a journal that I would not mind others reading as a way of better understanding me. One of my co-workers commented that she was not sure she needed a deeper look into my mind than she gets at the lunch table. Fair enough. So my day consists of reading a lot of news, email threads and message boards. If I come across anything that tickles my fancy, I will post it here. As much as I would like to tell myself that this is all for me, I really would like to see some comments and foster a discussion.

Good times...

I have it on good authority...

That if you're in England and you go to a fish and chips place, order a pie, chips and gravy. My friend from England says you'll be pleased.

Wow, this guy makes you think about the Poker explosion

I work in a Willa Wonka type place

It is a huge factory. The factory floor is a mile long. You have cranes flying around overhead. Every kind of cart imaginable. No scratch that, I never imagined the diversity of available carts until now. 3 wheeled bicycles, 2 wheeled bicycles, golf carts, cushmans, stand up little chariot things. I'm sure I'm leaving out a few.

Big machines cutting aluminum with this milky coolant flying everywhere. Very trippy.

Sometimes when I am coming back from lunch, I see fighter jets taking off and banking. Very cool.

It is a very surreal environment to have an ugly cube.

Vacation

I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fucking fun park, and you wanna bail out! Well, I'll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation . . . it's a quest! It's a quest for fun! I'm gonna have fun, and you're gonna have fun! We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgery to remove our Goddamn smiles! You'll be whistling Zip-a-dee-doo-da out of your assholes! I've got to be crazy! I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose! Praise Marty Moose!

Long car vacations are fun. More to come...

Water tower in Iraq

My moment in the (hot ass) sun

After going nearly 2 months (over a couple of different softball leagues) without so much as an attempt to catch a ball in right field, I got my chance last night. Guy hit a little looper into right. I got a decent jump on the ball and ran under and caught it like a pro.

Let the count down begin

I bought a nice pair of sunglasses today at the mall. Ray Ban. I bought them at approx. 12:00 noon on July 10, 2006. I will update when I lose them.

The worst 24 hours of my life (or one of...)

I got swimmer's ear last week (ph), and Saturday afternoon I got a seriously bad sinus headache. I went to bed 7:00 Sat. night. Woke up Sun. Morning at 6:00 for the end of my sailing class, got up too quickly and got ill. Dry retching: good times, good times... I knew I was really sick when the smell of coffee in the morning made me sick.

So, had the sailing thing not been something I had been trying so hard for, and had it not been such a tough road to get to the edge of finality. I decided to gut it out and go finish my sailing course. Got there and luckily we were taking the written test first. 130 questions. I missed 5...fighting back nausea.

So, I wrapped up the sailing thing, went straight home and straight to bed. At about 2:00, I started the dry retching in 30 minutes to an hour intervals. Good times... This lasted until 8 or 9. Woke up at 2:00 am with the same splitting headache. Had one last grand finale dry retch. Slept until 6:00. Woke up feeling better. That first piece of dry toast was a leap of faith.

So far, so good...

Upon further reflection, I don't think the swimmer's ear made me sick. I think I got a 24hr bug.

That pH thing works itself out

JOHN!!!!

http://www.cdc.gov/healthyswimming/pdf/swimmers_ear.pdf

I talked to my brother this past weekend about pool maintenance. I told him that my pH had been high and I had to add some muriatic acid to my pool. He says to me, "That pH thing works itself out". Yeah, so do infections. Swimmer’s ear hurts.

Just to clarify, I swam in his pool that whole weekend.

This will probably be my private diary that no one ever sees. So be it.
